Artist Statement:

My favorite subject is the sea. I first work on site, quickly capturing the energy of the scene with broad brush strokes and complementary colors at the highest points of interest. Bundled in a rash guard shirt, a rain jacket, or a down coat, wearing latex gloves over winter gloves, you might see me out by the ocean, plein-air painting. Back in my studio, videos and photographs remind me of the experience of being there. I find that the more familiar I am with a place, the more I see it in a new way. These details become my inspiration. I look for those differences – what has changed? I enjoy meeting the challenge of representing the same view in a totally different painting. Nature presents constant change, movement, and adaptation. Just watch!

Acrylics are my usual medium, but sometimes watercolor on paper is the right material. I am use non-representational pigments. Rocks, sand, and water can be blue, pink, purple, yellow, and gray. Occasionally, I recreate evening scenes, working in darks, highlighted by moonlight.

I spent many happy hours, many summers in Maine, surfing in the cold ocean. I developed a respect for the interdependence, connections, and undercurrents in nature. I create movement and energy using lively brush strokes, and relationships between color, shape, and form. It brings me great pleasure to re-experience my joy through paint. I skirt the line between realism and abstraction. The emotive expression honors how no two waves, rocks, or impressions in sand are alike. My hope is that viewers of my paintings will see new and different aspects each time they come back to them.
